Netgear WN511B

  • Chipset: not sure
  • pciid: 14e4:4329
  • Driver: drivers from the cd that came with the device Version 6.2

Info

Used the following procedure:

  1. installed drivers on a Windows machine (default install location was C:\Program Files\Netgear\WN511B)
  2. copied drivers from Windows machine to laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 in a directory I created like (as root) #mkdir /root/wireless_drivers
  3. loaded ndiswrapper from the Ubuntu CD (used an alternate install CD due to the capabilities of the laptop) by opening Synaptic Package Manager, selecting Edit | Add CD Rom from menu (since laptop has no hardwire internet access) and doing a search for "ndis". This loaded ndiswrapper-common, ndisgtk, ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
  4. Followed section 3.1 Disable Free Drivers on this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper#autostart
  5. used ndisgtk to install the windows drivers (same page as above)
  6. Set security to match my router (Netgear RangeMax using WPA-PSK with mac address filtering (paranoia)
