The native linux rtl8187 driver, which loads automatically with this device, continually loses network connectivity particularly with large file transfers. I've tried it with Debian testing, Debian unstable, Arch, and PCLOS, and had similar results with all installations. I couldn't find a proprietary Linux driver for a kernel later than 3.3. The alfanetwork download includes a folder for windows xp x86 driver. It contains two .inf files: net8187b.inf and Netrtuw.inf, and two .sys files: rtl8187.sys and rtl8187B.sys. A combination of net8187b.inf and rtl8187B.sys doesn't work. A combination of Netrtuw.inf and rtl8187.sys works perfectly. (I tried each combination by copying just the .inf and .sys files to a separate folder and installing the .inf file into ndiswrapper.) Strong, fast connection and no loss of connectivity even with very large file transfers. I had to blacklist the linux rtl8187 driver to keep it from automatically reloading. I'm using 3.4.52-pclos1 kernel.
Reported to work with custom compilation.

Add the following to ntoskernal_io.c

wstdcall NTSTATUS WIN_FUNC(IoUnregisterPlugPlayNotification,1)
(void *tag)
IOEXIT(return STATUS_SUCCESS); /* Linux doesn't use it either */
}

'''There is no need any more for custom compilation, it is already done in the current version(1.57) of ndiswrapper.'''

If you install cd that comes with the adapter on Windows 64 bit machine,
files of the driver is installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\NETGEAR\driver\WIN764 and its name is bcmwlhigh6.

If you install it on 32 bit, you will already get correct driver, bcmwlhigh5.
However, you use it under ndiswrapper on 64 bit Ubuntu, you will get a lot of uninitialized variables.

felmas@fachoper:~$ ndiswrapper -i path/to/driver/directory/bcmwlhigh6.inf
==Info on Broadcom variant==
Just added this so that people know that the UK variation can be used. I used the standard belkin driver, but you need to install it to somewhere in windows to extract the relevant sys and inf files. Works like a charm with fedora core 2 and fedora core 3 (though with fc3 you will need to download the kernel source rpm as it doesn’t come with the standard package).

Finally works on my system (the card says “version 1133uk”, Debian woody, kernel 2.4.28, ndiswrapper 0.11, Dell drivers, hand-compiled wirless-tools v27). Here are a few hints if you’re having trouble:
# try different combinations of ndiswrapper version and driver (Belkin, Dell).
# make sure wireless extension version of your wireless-tools matches the one of ndiswrapper (Debian woody wireless-tools were too old, iwconfig wouldn’t work), see http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.htm for more information.
# wireless won’t work if your machine also has another network card connected to the same network.

Works like a charm on this Mandrake 10.1 system here, I was very pleasantly surprised. Just followed the instructions in the docs and it worked! Used the Mandrake configuration tools for wireless network setup (Control Centre → Network & Internet → Manage Connections, select the wireless card).

==Info on Ralink variant==
Debian stable Sarge (2.4.27-2-386) works a treat. I followed the “InstallDebianSarge” instructions which were great. In the end however, I didn’t need the “Install latest Ndiswrapper” section as version 1.1 comes already available. Also, needed unzip utility (apt-get install unzip). Cheers!.

==Info on Realtek variant==

Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy), but installed under 7.04 by uninstalling supplied version using instructions on this site, and installing latest version. Didn’t work properly (crashed system) until upgrade, so suspect kernel issues. Now using 2.6.22-14.

Jim reports, I can't get this card to work, as it spawns a mp_reset:62 message every few seconds and freezes the system. I've tried it in Ubuntu Intrepid and Jaunty and it works in neither.

---
Driver: blkwgdv (F5D7000 Driver Version 7 from Belkin web site)
ndiswrapper version: 1.58

'''Update''' This card was causing a system lock up but I managed to get it working.

Firstly, I updated my Linux kernel to the most recent one available to me (in my case a
Debian Squeeze backported kernel) and downloaded the the testing version of
ndiswrapper.

If you are getting a system lock (you may also be seeing \'alternate driver: rtl8180\' when
you run \'ndiswrapper -l\'), then blacklist the rtl8180 kernel module. That should put a stop
to the crashing.

If it still isn\'t working (even though the driver might appear to be installed properly in
ndiswrapper), first run \'ndiswrapper -v\' and make sure it isn\'t complaining about the
wrong utils version. Then, work through this excellent ndiswrapper troubleshooting
guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885847

Those were the steps that I followed and should hopefully help others.
However driver may not be loaded by default or matching with device may be wrong.
If this is the case, when you list installed drivers, you will see an output similar to this:

felmas@fachoper:~$ ndiswrapper -l

After so many tests in a 64bit system on which I received kernel senseless (at least for me) falls of numbers and letters I re-installed
my original 32bit (with PAE for full memory access) and the original stock driver works like a charm.

I think the main reason for that panic is that WINXP drivers are 32bit ONLY and so on 64bit system no Belkin play can do ndiswrapper :)

Of course if someone finds the driver maybe it can work but the original one is perfect for linux 32bit.

Some notes on my distribution/hardware:

Linux Gentoo 2.6.39-gentoo-r3 #1 SMP i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

==64bit update==
The driver in the cdrom don't work on 64 bit machine as the driver is just 32 bit.

If you download that package at

http://media.cdn.ubuntu-de.org/forum/attachments/2612284/Broadcom_bcm43xx_USB_32_64bit_v2.tar.gz

you will find the 64bit version of driver.
By adding with ndiswrapper, everything works.

While adding in ndsiwrapper, the system could give you some error.
Don't worry about it. it works.

The driver ipw2100 that is shipped with ubuntu 11.11 appears not to work on a t42 with this wireless card.
I tried Ndiswrapper and it works. One must download a driver file from the address above and use

cabextract <filename.exe>
This device is reported to work on i386 (see report below) but no successful report on x86_64.

This is Ubuntu 10.10 on an AMD x86_64.

Plugged the device in, and saw it appear in lsusb, and a message appears in /var/log/messages

new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and addresss 11

But iwconfig shows no wlan0.

Downloaded the Linux drivers from Edimax (the Realtek drivers).
They build, but with lots of warnings relating to 64 vs 32 bit stuff.
The module loads, but does not work. Lots of errors appear in /var/log/messages,
mostly "usb read/wrote TimeOut!"
Wrote to Realtek support asking them to fix this, haven't heard back.

Similar story, no apparent solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1658112

So unloaded the 8192cu module, blacklisted it in in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf Then installed ndiswrapper, and got the Windows drivers from the Edimax site.
There are 32 and 64 bit versions for Win7 Vista and XP. Tried XP 64 first,
then the other 64 bit ones, then the 32 bit ones. They load

$ ndiswrapper -l
net8192cu: device (7392:7811) present (alternate driver: 8192cu)

but iwconfig shows no wlan0

<hr>

It is possible to use WinXP 32bit drivers from Edimax site -- but only g mode is available (tested on Fedora 15 i386). Native driver rtl8192cu also loads, but card doesn't see my access points (tested on D-Link DWL-2100, TP-Link TL-WR1043ND with WPA2-PSK CCMP/CCMP).

$ cd 88_92_CU_Driver/WinXP

$ sudo ndiswrapper -i `readlink -f net8192cu.inf`

There's a bunch of stuff in the .zip file mentioned above. NDISWrapper + .../Drivers/XP/32-bit/arusb_xp.inf worked the first time. This dongle was flakey (dropped connections) with the native driver included in the Ubuntu 10.1 distro. I did not try the Linux driver included in the GWU623.zip file.
The driver installation disk that comes with the N600 should be
used to install the bcmwlhigh5.inf driver. I have not tried the
setup.exe. Instead, I mounted the disk on my iMac, changed
directories to the InstallationFiles/drivers and zipped the xp directory.
I then transferred the resulting xp.zip file to my MSI U100 netbook,
and unzipped the xp.zip folder. I followed this procedure since I do not
have a CD-ROM drive on my netbook. Of course, if you can mount the
disk on your machine, zipping and unzipping the directory is not needed.
Run sudo ndisgtk, browse to the (unzipped) xp folder, select bcmwlhigh5.inf
and install the driver. It worked for me under Ubuntu 11.04.

Well, I tried ndiswrapper at first, using the original windows driver
provided with the product. It did seem to work at first, displaying
the device, allowing me to scan and connect and all, but kept
reconnecting, and failed altogether after a while, meaning that it
won't successfully connect to any wifi network. Also, the LED
indicator on the device (which should be a steady green when
connected) flashed very slowly, indicating an endless loop of
reconnects.

Later the day, I came across a tutorial aimed at the device, providing
a means of using the linux driver provided by the chipset
manufacturer. The original link is
'http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/viewtopic.php?f=116&t=323374' (WARNING: It
is in Chinese). Once the compiled kernel modules is loaded, the device
works perfectly, except the signal strength kept switching between
"Excellent" and "Poor" when in fact it is "Poor".

Ubuntu 11.04. The device seems to work somehow with rt2800usb and little better with rt2870sta. Both native drivers suffers from reliability problem: connection drops for several seconds at about every 120s. I tried WinXPX64 driver (as i am running x86_64). The ndisiwrapper loaded ok and network was working. After a while system crashed (for the first time in several months). Reboot and re-try and after 15min usage yet another crash.

There are 32 and 64 bit versions for Win7 Vista and XP. Tried XP 64 first,
then the other 64 bit ones, then the 32 bit ones. They load

XP driver did not work for a 64bit pristine Debian Squeeze
system, but works smooth with 32bit

---

ndis was doing something weird, every time i tried to wrap the driver, ndis would give me the options available to it. not sure how i got it to quit doing that, or if it was even me. tried winxp winvista and win2000 drivers only one worked was 2000.

---

I needed to apply a work-around to get this device
up under a 32-bit SMP kernel. It appears that when an
ndiswrapper kernel thread is scheduled to a different CPU
the device hangs. You can usually pump about 100-200Mb full
bore before this occurs. (This sound familiar)? If you
lock the threads down to one CPU the device stays up. Under
a 64-bit kernel, the ntos_wq thread causes a kernel oops and
hangs the machine, usually within 5-6 seconds. (It might be
related, but I didn't do this affinity test on 64-bit).

The work around is QCD on gentoo using /etc/conf.d/local.start:
schedtool -a 0 `ps -e | grep _wq | gawk '{print $1}'`

The same behaviour was observed using all three
preemption models. More SMP investigation is obviously
needed, but at the least, the code could lock its own
threads down as a quick band-aid.

My system:

2 CPUs, i686 AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 215 Processor

kernel 2.6.32-gentoo-r6 (SMP)
